“We design and manufacture equipment for disabled people and want to recruit a craftsman with significant metal milling and turning experience. The ability to weld, work in sheet metal, wood and plastic would be an advantage.”

DEMAND is a small charity that was founded 30 years ago to design and make one-off or bespoke items of equipment for disabled people if no off-the-shelf solution to their problem exists.

DEMAND employs both designers and craftsmen to undertake these tasks. The design office and the workshop are both housed in a converted church on the former Leavesden Hospital site in Abbots Langley. The successful candidate will work alongside a small team of skilled craftsmen in the engineering workshop.

Job Location: Abbots Langley

Purpose of the Job: To manufacture solutions specified by the design team.

Accountable to: Brian McGirr (Chief Designer)

Job Description:

The job will include but not limited to:

  • The manufacture of products in any material from verbal instructions, sketches and engineering drawings.
  • Working as required by project managers to achieve the timely completion of soundly manufactured products to the standard required.
  • Working in cooperation with other craftsmen.
  • Acting in a self-supervisory capacity in the workshop.
  • Ensuring any safety issues are brought to the attention of the Health & Safety Representative.
  • Immediately reporting any accidents to the Chief Executive and the Chief Designer.

Additional Duties that may be required:

  • Deputy Fire Officer
  • First Aider
  • Deputy First Aider
  • Health & Safety at Work Representative

Person Specification:

Mandatory -

  • Fitter/ Turner with experience and full familiarity with the operation of lathes and milling machines, and their use on Mild Steel, Stainless Steel and Aluminium.
  • Willingness to work with other materials, learn new processes and to “turn their hand to anything”.
  • Ability to work cooperatively with others.
  • Able to accept direction from project managers.
  • Able to work conscientiously and safely unsupervised.

Desirable -

  • Welding Skills.
  • Woodwork Skills.
  • Plastic Skills.
